Charles Hagen is a photographer and writer who lives in Brooklyn, New York. His photographs have been exhibited at Sarah Morthland Gallery, Lennon Weinberg Gallery, David Beitzel Gallery, Packer Collegiate Institute, Sideshow Gallery and Techonomy, all in New York; and at the William Benton Museum of Art, Storrs, Connecticut, and the Anna Leonowens Gallery, Halifax, and elsewhere.
Emeritus Associate Professor of Art at the University of Connecticut, he also taught for many years in the MFA program at Bard College.
He previously was a critic for the New York Times, Aperture and Artforum and many other publications. He was the Reviews Editor of Artforum, Editor of Aperture, and a Founding Editor at Afterimage Magazine.
He has been a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome and a fellow at Yaddo and The Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
Over the years I have worked in a variety of roles in art and photography, including as a photographer, an editor, a critic, and a teacher.
Of particular note in this list is extensive writing about art and photography including reviews and essays published on an almost weekly basis for the New York Times over almost eight years, as well as short and long articles. Less frequent were articles written for Aperture, Afterimage, and elsewhere.
Many of these writings, both short and long, have been indexed by the publications in which they first appeared. This is especially true for the New York Times and Artforum.
